Writers' Ink at Caledon Public Library

Disguises of a Colour

It can be as varied as…

The whir of hummingbird wings above my head

The gossamer shimmer of dragonflies by the pond

The jumping spider I keep my eye on

I see it in…

My breath in the cold

The bleached starkness of summer sky

When thunder grumbles its moodiness

And lightning fissures the clouds

Before giving way to misty rain

I feel its beauty in…

The serenity of the day at dusk

With the sun’s shadowy slipping away

In the smoky fingers of evening sky

And the moon’s marbleizing of the night

Its opalescent frosting of trees and leaves

I hear it in…

The splash of the waterfall over craggy rocks

Round stones on the shore smoothed by waves

The echoes of the sea in all its masquerades

I explore its wonder in…

The roughness of oyster shells

The dusty film on kale in my garden

The underside of poplar leaves

Fuzzy lichen clinging to trees

for reasons I know nothing about

I taste it in…

The bubbles in Sprite

The crunchy inside of celery

Mushrooms yielding to my teeth

Crackers topped with tahini

It stirs fading memory…

With the softest brush of muslin

The worn knees of my jeans

Lace, stained and old

the whitening of ageing scars

The moments before awakening

The candle light but not the glow

Power to tempt and to amuse

A chameleon colour of all and none

Hints and clues of tints and hues

Serious, subtle, sober and fun
