Writers' Ink at Caledon Public Library

In the bend of night

when a lifetime of almosts

swoops down in dream

like a murder of crows

to tear at the cadaver

of what might have been

I wake to the lunar howls

of hunting coyotes

closing on their prey

imagine the poor rabbit

torn apart in dim moonlit fields

quivering paws

eyes gone glassy

the luminescence of blood

flash of fang, flesh and claw

the messy death of creatures

large and small

a north wind howls through the spruce

banging the iron fist of winter

against my window pane

rabid coyotes

ravished rabbits

icy winds

are fingers of a disembodied hand

pointing in the bend of night

at the ravages of time

that chase me through

the tangled grasses of biography

blood spattered

clinging to a narrative

filled with the hungry gropings

of a life lived in uncertainty

the howling dissipates

the wind dies

the rabbit is no more

and I fall back asleep

knowing that somewhere

a farmer’s sure finger

rests on the gentle curve

of a trigger
