Memoir Authorship Under The Microscope

“I remember once feeling ‘This is fine, they’ll publish it’ – but I hated myself” – ‘Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?’ and ‘Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit’ author Jeanette Winterson. Guardian Memoir Writers event

From ‘How to write a memoir‘ a Guardian Live event at London’s (UK) Islington Assembly Hall this past June 3rd. Guardian newspaper critic Alex Clark spoke with Jeanette Winterson and Helen Macdonald, two highly successful memoir writers. Their conversation covers five tips for today’s memoir author:

1. Don’t try to ‘fit’ the genre

2. Choose your chronology

3. Trust your readers

4. Trust yourself

5. Don’t be afraid to start over

As for rules for memoirists, don’t worry says Ms Winterson: “There aren’t any rules. You may write something and think, ‘I’m not sure why this is here’, but it may become incredibly important as you build it further. Allow your writing to cohere later on: give it a chance.
