The Pitfalls of Essay Writing

essay writing

From the Twitter timeline @rgay of Roxane Gay of The Butter, a listing of reasons why most essays submitted for publication fail to be accepted:

Generally speaking, the reasons most essays are being rejected are some of the following:-
1. It is too tied to a ‘news peg’ and is not evergreen
2. The essay doesn’t seem to acknowledge anything beyond the writer’s experience
3. On a sentence level, the writing is unpolished
4. The essay doesn’t take risks, offer new insights, or make me feel something strong
5. The essay is too chronological. First this happened, then that happened, and then this other thing happened
6. There is no musicality to the prose, no soul to the writing
7. The essay is too aware that it is an essay e.g. in this essay I will write about x, y, and z
8. The essay is way too short, more of notes toward what could be a good essay
9. The essay is too long, and the writer has gotten lost in their prose and can’t find a way out
10. The essay, in tone, doesn’t offer any respect for humanity or is racist, sexist, homophobic, trans-phobic and the like.
