55 years after ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, Ms Harper Lee is to publish ‘Go Set a Watchman’, from a manuscript completed in the mid-1950s but lost till last autumn. This is a stunning bonanza. “The novel was written by Lee before To Kill a Mockingbird, but is set some 20 years later. It features Lee’s beloved character Scout as an adult, returning to her home town of Maycomb from New York to visit Atticus, her lawyer father, along with many of the characters from Lee’s debut.” from Guardian Books Feb 3rd.
Not long ago I ‘read’ To Kill a Mockingbird once again as an audio-book marvellously well narrated in down-home Georgia accents by Sissy Spacek. I then found a copy of the classic film with Gregory Peck as Atticus. Storytelling doesn’t come much better than these deeply moving portrayals.
